4-8 Women • 2 Days / 1 Night • 28.2 km Return • Challenging Hike • $195

Not ready to tackle the full Cape Chignecto Loop? Start with one unforgettable night in the backcountry.

Join us for a guided overnight adventure to Eatonville Cabin in Cape Chignecto Provincial Park, one of Nova Scotia's most spectacular wilderness destinations.

This experience combines peaceful forest trails, remote wilderness, and the satisfaction of carrying everything you need into the backcountry.

Led by an OCC Certified Field Leader with Advanced Wilderness First Aid training, you'll experience the challenge, connection, and confidence that come from spending a night beyond the trailhead.

Peaceful Wilderness.

Remote Forest.

One Unforgettable Night

WHY CAPE CHIGNECTO?

There is something different about spending time in places where everything you need is carried on your back.

Cape Chignecto is home to some of the most dramatic landscapes in Nova Scotia, and the hike from Red Rocks to Eatonville Cabin offers a peaceful introduction to backcountry backpacking through the heart of Nova Scotia wilderness. The trail winds along narrow forest paths beneath a canopy of spruce, fir, and hardwood trees, with rolling terrain, roots, occasional muddy sections, and the quiet rhythm of hiking through the forest for much of the day.

While physically demanding, the route is not highly technical, making it an excellent first overnight backpacking experience for hikers looking to build confidence carrying a pack and spending a night in the backcountry.

For Trail Ready Woman graduates and women taking their first steps into backpacking, Eatonville is one of the best introductory overnight routes in Cape Chignecto. It provides the full backcountry experience, carrying your gear, preparing meals, sleeping in a remote cabin, and travelling through wilderness terrain, without the steep coastal climbs and sustained elevation changes found elsewhere on the Cape Chignecto loop.

Eatonville Cabin is an ideal next step for hikers looking to transition from day hiking to overnight backcountry adventures, build self-reliance, and discover what is possible when they venture beyond the trailhead.

WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT

THE EXPERIENCE

Part 1: Prepare for the Expedition

Success in the backcountry begins long before you step onto the trail.

Participants receive detailed pre-trip information designed to help them prepare for an overnight wilderness experience. This includes route information, distance, elevation, terrain expectations, gear recommendations, packing guidance, food planning considerations, and information about what to expect throughout the trip.

Before departure, we review the route, campsite plans, weather conditions, safety considerations, and group expectations so everyone arrives ready to focus on the adventure.

Our goal is to help you arrive feeling prepared, informed, and confident.

Part 2: Journey into the Wilderness

This is where the adventure begins.

Unlike a day hike, backcountry travel requires a different mindset. Participants carry their equipment, food, water, and overnight gear while travelling through remote environments where self-sufficiency, preparation, and teamwork become part of the experience.

The pace is intentional. While reaching camp is part of the journey, so is taking time to appreciate the landscape, enjoy the company of the group, and experience the satisfaction that comes from travelling through remote places under your own power.

Part 3: Develop Wilderness Self-Reliance

For many participants, camp becomes one of the most memorable parts of the adventure.

After a day on the trail, there is something uniquely satisfying about arriving at a remote cabin, settling in, sharing a meal, and spending time surrounded by nature and good company.

Participants will have time to:

• Relax and recover
• Prepare dinner
• Explore the surrounding area
• Share stories and experiences
• Enjoy the quiet of the wilderness

It's often here that participants realize they are more comfortable, adaptable, and capable than they expected.

Part 4: Build Your Adventure Community

Valkyrie experiences bring together women who share a desire for adventure, personal growth, and meaningful outdoor experiences. Whether sharing stories over dinner, celebrating the completion of a challenging hike, or simply enjoying the quiet of a remote campsite, participants often discover that the connections formed in the wilderness are every bit as memorable as the landscapes themselves.

For many women, the experience becomes more than an overnight trip. It becomes a reminder of what is possible when preparation, determination, and adventure come together.

FITNESS & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

This is a challenging overnight backpacking experience that requires participants to hike approximately 14 km each way while carrying a fully loaded overnight backpack.

While the trail itself is not highly technical, the distance, time on your feet, and pack weight should not be underestimated. Participants can expect rolling terrain, roots, mud, uneven surfaces, and several long sections of forest trail. Most groups will spend 4 to 6 hours hiking each day, plus breaks.

This experience is best suited to women who:

  • Regularly hike and enjoy spending extended periods on the trail

  • Can comfortably complete 12-15 km day hikes

  • Are capable of carrying a 25-35 lb backpack

  • Are comfortable being active for several hours at a time

  • Are looking to take the next step beyond day hiking and experience backcountry travel

While this experience is physically demanding, it is often considered one of the more accessible overnight backpacking routes in Nova Scotia because it offers the full backcountry experience without the steep coastal climbs found elsewhere on the Cape Chignecto loop.

If you are unsure whether this experience is right for you, please reach out before booking. We're happy to discuss your hiking background and help determine if this adventure is a good fit.

Food and Water

Participants are responsible for bringing all meals, snacks, and beverages required for the duration of the trip. At a minimum, participants should plan for lunch and dinner on Day 1, breakfast and lunch on Day 2, as well as sufficient trail snacks to maintain energy throughout both days. Water sources may be available along the route and near Eatonville Cabin, however all water must be properly treated before consumption. Participants are required to carry adequate water capacity and will receive detailed guidance on hydration requirements, water treatment, and meal planning prior to departure.

Pack Weight

Participants should expect to carry an overnight backpack containing: clothing and personal items, sleeping gear, food and water, personal medications, emergency and comfort items

Most participants should expect pack weights between 25 and 35 pounds depending on personal gear choices and water requirements.

Communication and Cell Service

Cellular coverage is limited or unavailable throughout much of Cape Chignecto Provincial Park. Participants should not expect reliable access to cell service during the trip and should plan accordingly. For safety purposes, the guide will carry a Garmin InReach satellite communication device capable of emergency communication and SOS activation.

Weather

Cape Chignecto is known for rapidly changing and often unpredictable weather conditions. Participants should be prepared for a wide range of conditions including rain, wind, fog, cool temperatures, and warm, humid weather. Weather forecasts will be monitored closely leading up to departure, however conditions can change quickly once on the trail. Participant safety is always the priority, and routes, timing, itineraries, or trip dates may be modified if conditions are considered unsafe.

Facilities

Facilities are limited once the hike begins. Washroom facilities are available at the trailhead, and Eatonville Cabin provides basic backcountry shelter for the overnight stay. Participants should not expect access to stores, restaurants, potable water, electrical power, charging stations, or other services while on the trail. This is a true backcountry experience where participants must be self-sufficient and carry everything required for the duration of the trip.

Transportation

Participants are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from Cape Chignecto Provincial Park. Detailed directions and meeting instructions will be provided prior to departure. While participants may choose to coordinate carpooling amongst themselves, Valkyrie Adventures cannot guarantee transportation arrangements and is not responsible for travel logistics.

Group Size

Group sizes are intentionally kept small to create a safer, more supportive, and more enjoyable backcountry experience. Each trip requires a minimum of four participants and is limited to a maximum of eight participants. Smaller groups allow for better pacing, more individualized support, stronger group cohesion, and a more meaningful wilderness experience.

Important Considerations

This is a physically demanding backcountry adventure and should not be underestimated. While the total distance is moderate, the trail includes repeated steep ascents and descents, uneven terrain, roots, rocks, mud, and the added challenge of carrying a fully loaded overnight backpack. Participants should be physically prepared to hike for approximately five to seven hours each day while carrying their own gear. The effort required is significant, but so are the rewards. Those who complete the journey will experience one of Nova Scotia's most spectacular wilderness destinations while gaining confidence, resilience, and a deeper appreciation for what they are capable of accomplishing.

This is an illustrative reconstruction of the elevation of this hike. Total elevation gain is 277 metres which is roughly equivalent to climbing approximately 46-50 standard flights of stairs.
